Why Grades 2 to 8 Are the Right Time for Pathway

Grades 2 through 8 are when many families first notice that school feels harder for their child than it should. Pathway School in Laguna Hills welcomes students in exactly these grades, and that choice is intentional.

These are the years when reading, writing, and math skills either take root or start to slip. They are also the years when a child quietly decides whether school is a place where they can succeed. At Pathway, small classes with about one teacher for every 10 students give kids room to grow at their own pace, in a Christian community where they are known and encouraged.

Why reading struggles often surface in 2nd and 3rd grade

In kindergarten and first grade, children are learning to read. By second and third grade, the expectation shifts: students are asked to read to learn. Texts get longer, pictures and patterns give fewer clues, and reading shows up in every subject, from math word problems to science.

That shift is when many bright kids who learn differently start to fall behind. A child who kept up by memorizing or guessing may suddenly avoid reading aloud, rush through homework, or say they "hate school." Parents often sense something is off long before a report card confirms it.

Starting at Pathway in these early grades means a child gets multi-sensory reading instruction and steady support before the gap grows, and before frustration turns into a belief that they are not smart. Our 2nd grade class, new this year, gives families the chance to step in even earlier.

Why the middle school years matter just as much

By 4th grade and beyond, schoolwork asks more of a student's organization and time management. Assignments span several days, classes move faster, and kids are expected to manage more on their own. For students who learn differently, this is often when stress and self-doubt build.

At Pathway, our homeroom teachers teach executive function skills every week, so students learn how to plan, organize, and start tasks with confidence. Middle schoolers also grow in self-advocacy and character, with a clear focus on getting ready for high school. By 8th grade, our students know how they learn best and can speak up for what they need.

Support built right into the school day

Pathway families do not have to drive across town for extra help. Much of the support a child needs happens on campus, during the school day, without losing time in class.

The Learning Center. Our learning resource specialist works with students who need extra practice in reading, writing, and math. Small-group sessions help close gaps while students stay on track with their classmates. Students at or above grade level receive enrichment coursework during this time.

Occupational therapy. OT helps students build the fine motor, sensory, and self-regulation skills that make handwriting, focus, and daily routines easier. Our OT works with students on campus, and OT is included in tuition.

Speech support. Speech therapy is available on site, helping students grow in language, communication, and confidence. Speech services are offered separately from tuition.
